The instrumentation for this work is: 4 bongos, 2 congas, concert bass drum, small tambourine, tibetan jing cymbals (mounted as a hi hat), log drum (2 pitches), 4 prepared cowbells, tubular bells, prayer bells, calves and voice. This is a challenging work that uses intense static units of polyrhythmic patterns that vary slightly in each bar, with vocal shouts interjecting. The different drumming sections are separated by serial tone clusters on the tubular bells and contrasting material on the cowbells and log drums. As the different sections develop they also begin to overlap until they are all occurring simultaneously. This leads to the closing coda at which point the southern hymn "My Song in the Night" is presented, although it is surrounded by the tone clusters from earlier in the work. This is a truly remarkable piece that will hopefully become a standard in the repertoire.
