"Introduction to Jazz Vibes", by Gary Burton, was the first true formative study written for jazz vibraphone. The purpose of this text, as stated by the author, is to "gain complete technical freedom through the greatest development of facility and control" as opposed to the study of "rehearsed licks". This text will help the advanced improvisor to "clear his mind of automatic phrases and rehearsed patterns, so as to create freely and with the least restriction"; "to give the student freedom with unrestricted technique"
