These "authentic" horse hooves sound like a couple of plastic yogurt cups on a Formica countertop. A very cheap and un-useable sound. I got a better sound from the blue and red plastic temple blocks. Surprised that Steve Weiss would carry such a chintzy product. Buy the plastic blocks instead.

An oldie but a goodie!

Again, here's another item that disappeared when Carroll Sound did (and Kamen/LP faded out the distribution of these sound effect items). When the old versions show up on ebay, they cost a mint and may not be in great shape. I have a set of the CS horse hooves without the board, and while they are good, you have to have the hard wood board to complete the sound! This adds to a percussionist's arsenal of sounds that people's ears recognize, but perhaps not in the context you use them. Good, solid, dependable effect - just like the old ones were! Thanks again, SWM, for keeping these great esoteric historical instruments alive!

More sounds possible than I thought

Can be played on the board or against each other to interesting effect. Scraping with some force on the board creates great squeals. Be sure to try clapping part way off the edge of the board for more low end. Boom.

Bought these for a medley of old TV Western themes I'm performing with a community band. I also tried a wood block, temple block, and coconut shells. I like these better.
