This work is in Five Movements:

-Ulterior Motives: Based off of interjections that span across the full ensemble
-Introversion: This movement is based off of a tremolo motif that is set in a fugal settting.
-Patterns: A set of patterns is repeated ans set across the entire instrumentation.
-Free Forms: A sixteenth note based texture is split throughout the ensemble givng a loose feel to the ensemble.
-Anticipations: Irregular Ternary rhythms dominate this section giving it an "anticipatory feel"

Instrumentation:

  • Player I: 4 Temple Blocks

  • Player II: 5 Brake Drums

  • Player III: 4 Tom-Toms

  • Player IV: 4 Suspended Cymbals

  • Player V: Snare Drum, Triangle, Claves

  • Player VI: 2 Bass Drums


  • George Andrix was born June 15, 1932. He began the study of the violin at the age of five (5) in his native Chicago. As a youngster, he attended the Chicago Musical College and Lane Technical High School where he received training in violin, music theory, and orchestral and chamber music repertoire. Later, he earned Bachelor of Master of Music degrees in viola and composition at the University of Illinois where he worked with such renowned musicians as George Enescu, Igor Stravinsky, Aaron Copland, Paul Hindemith, Paul Rolland, Sir Thomas Beecham, John Cage, Max Rostal, Benjamin Britten, and Harry Partch. He studied composition with Burrill Phillips and Robert Palmer.
