Mark Yancich, timpanist with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra since 1981, also served as timpanist and principal percussionist with orchestras in Maracaibo and Caracas, Venezuela. He is an active soloist, teacher/clinician, and is host for the annual Atlanta Percussion Seminar at Emory University. His background in the art of timpani performance and maintenance has been acquired from years of experience and from a strong tradition passed on to him by his mentor, Cloyd Duff (former timpanist of the Cleveland Orchestra).

The Art of Timpani presents a step-by-step procedure for changing plastic timpani heads. Mark demonstrates his technique for clearing a timpani head in order to assist the timpanist in producing the most beautiful, sonorous, ringing quality of sound a drum has to offer.

With emphasis on the sound of the timpani, mechanical procedures, and aural strategies, Mark delivers a vast amount of information about the following topics:

  • Tone Quality
  • Timpani Parts & Terms
  • Sizes & Ranges
  • Preparation & Supplies
  • Removing the Head
  • The Rim of the Kettle
  • The Theoretical Challenge: 'Evenness'
  • Ordering & Selecting New Heads
  • Placing the Head on the Bowl
  • Selecting the Playing Spot
  • Clearing the Head
  • Care & Maintenance
Also included are excerpts of Mark performing the recital version of James Oliverio's 'Timpani Concerto No. 1' (The Olympian)

Running time: Approximately 80 minutes
