The rubber is too thin you can hear the wood and the metal touching the notes .

Do not buy these mallets! The rubber on the playing end is too thin and does not sufficiently cover the edge of the mallet. The metal of the end of the mallet kept hitting the pan directly! We tried sliding the rubber higher up on the mallet but it would not budge. I ended up going back to buying lead mallets from Panyard.

I like the balance and weight of these mallets and the rubber on both ends eliminates the clatter caused by a dropped mallet. Also, the two ends do produce different tones, particularly on the high notes.
