So almost anyone with a snare drum has fiddled with everything from the batter head to the snares and all the stuff between looking for The Right Sound, yes? Some want their snare to so-and-so's on such-and-such track. Or louder, nastier, phatter--whatever. Well, these wires are a very useful tool to get from What I Have to Hey! That's Better. Not to go full-bore Harold Hill but these really opened my eyes years ago. I even spoke to the guy who owned Puresound before D'darrio took over and his explanation was simple: most snare wires are made from common steel, brass, or bronze (if not cable or catgut)--all relatively soft materials. He wondered if a harder alloy would sound different and tried stainless steel; a much harder material. True, he was looking literally to improve the sound of Concert snares, hence their name. But in place of plain brightness was a quality I prefer to consider as enunciation. Any snare I've installed these on, "speak clearly" rather than "mumble" in response to stick strikes--especially compared to those ghastly 42-wire units. The difference is, (pardon the pun) striking. Outside of head replacement, I've found nothing that improves my snare sound more. Even when playing Open Mike Night in Chicago's seedier saloons, some of the more musicly-minded patrons would lift their heads off the floor and mumble a laudatory comment before lapsing back into their stupor. That's real praise indeed! So give these a try. Give them to friends as a gift. A pair given to the hot female drummer in your band might even get you a shot at First Base if your timing is good. Or the savvy female fan of the latest tribute band might spring these on the drummer for an autograph on her arm or better. Either way, you never know, right? Try them; you'll like them.

I mounted these on an old Slingerland 5.5x14 6-lug drum because their wider coil size and lower number of strands makes them more similar to the drum's original wires (which were really beat up) than any other model I could find. With a Remo Skyntone batter and Hazy Ambassador snare side head, that drum sounded warm, open, and "throaty" like a good vintage wooden drum should, with lots of lovely overtones. Setting the wires loose gave a great sloshy sound, and tightening them gave a crisp, quick response. If I needed less of the sustaining overtones from the batter head, a simple business card set on the head did the trick. It worked great!

I put these on an old Slingerland snare drum, because the number of wires (12) and shape of the coils more closely resembles the original Slingerland wires than anything else I could find. The drum sounds warm and rich, with a nice sensitive response. The batter head is a Remo Skyntone, so it's got lots of ringing overtones, but the snares don't overreact to the head's sustain. I can let it ring, or put a little damping on for sustain control; it sounds great both ways. This set up is not for super hard hitting, but from low to medium-high dynamics, it works great.
