Daughtrey-Yuletide Marimbist - Product Information

The Yuletide Marimbist was created by Nathan Daughtrey to fill a void in Christmas literature for 4-mallet solo marimba. Spanning a wide range of styles, these arrangements are suitable for diverse performance venues – both sacred and secular. Only a 4 1/3-octave marimba is necessary, but cue notes are provided throughout for extended range if you have access to a 5-octave instrument. With one exception ("O Holy Night"), all of the arrangements are flexible in that they may be repeated one or more times by utilizing ending repeats or "D.S./D.C." indication. The book includes performance notes and mallet suggestions for each solo.

  • Nathan Daughtrey (b. 1975) earned a Bachelor Degree in Music Education (1997), a Master of Music in Percussion Performance (1999) and a Doctor of Musical Arts (2004) from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Described as "fresh and imaginative," (Percussive Notes), his band and percussion works are quickly gaining international recognition with performances at educational institutions of all levels, festivals/contests, and music conferences around the world. Many of his original works and arrangements are becoming standards in the repertoire, including "Limerick Daydreams" for percussion ensemble or symphonic band, "Shock Factor" for percussion quintet, and "Strange Dreams" for clarinet/alto saxophone and marimba.

    It fills the void

    Comments:

You have been asked to play some Christmas music on the marimba at your church or for a holiday event. Where will you go to find some appropriate sheet music? The Yuletide Marimbist provides you with a selection of good Christmas pieces that are listenable to almost anyone. This book fills the void where marimba music is needed for churches and public venues outside of the recital hall. I only have one criticism of this book: Some of the arrangements seem a little undeveloped musically. With a little more compositional effort, the pieces could have been more interesting. But, I still like the arrangements overall. With the arrangements written for a 4.3 octave marimba, the music is accessible to those of us who don't own a bigger marimba.

    Very Good Arrangements

    Comments:

I have only had a chance to play a couple of the pieces, but the ones I have chosen have been great. The audience will enjoy familiar melodies and the marimba player will enjoy playing them. The pieces are not arranged as if they were done for another instrument and transcribed for marimba. It is like he started with a melody (or maybe a variation on a melody) and wrote a marimba piece. I consider myself to be an advanced beginner to intermediate player. I find the pieces playable but they require some practice. Also, I'm really happy that all of the pieces can be played on a 4.3 Marimba.
