Perhaps they are ebony, but they sound like plastic. No matter how I play them I can't get a true castanet sound. They are loud though. I'll probably return them and keep looking.

I really like the design of this. The castanets themselves sound good, but are a little higher in pitch than I would like. If you need something that will cut, this is a good choice.

The Toca Castanet Machine is the only castanet you will need. It is easy to play and adjust and can be mounted on a stand if desired. It is very reasonably priced and sounds great. Recommended!
