Vic Firth TW12 Steve Smith Tala Wands feature a foam center that is surrounded with birch dowels wrapped in thin PVC. Outstanding rebound and sound. While the shaft is thicker than the TW11, the weight of the birch dowels actually helps create a lighter touch and lower volume.

Even though there are 12 dowels in the Tala Wand 12, it feels a little lighter than the bamboo Tala Wand 11. The 12 dowels have a very nice feel in your hands and the sound on the drums and cymbals have a lot of clarity and definition. The TW12 Tala Wand is great for light and very detailed playing. They respond quickly and are perfect for very fast playing.

Comments: I tried these in an attempt to remedy a volume problem in church. It's a small country church with only drums and keyboard. The volume was perfect. I didn't have to hold back, and I got the desired low volume but with good clarity. The response was surprisingly great. I had no problems digging out double strokes or grace notes or anything. Really surprised at how they responded and how fun they are to play. But the problem that will keep me from ever buying these again is that I used them 2 times and the birch dowels started breaking off one by one. By my third use I broke a third dowel, and the foam insert popped right out. Basically this made it floppy, mushy, and rendured them useless. For the price I was very dissappointed, especially considering I am definitely not a hard hitter.
