Description

This Weiss Hand Selected Jin Ban Gong is a unique and sometimes overlooked gong. The Gongs are typically used in traditional festivals. Wooden slats are sometimes crossed and tucked in between the lip to create a handle. Your can also hold it in your hand a similar way by pressing your thumbs and fingers into the lip of the gong. The Jin Ban has an upward bend that is higher pitched than an opera gong with a much shorter decay. But the Jin Ban becomes more interesting when you play it in a non-traditional way. Lay it face down and play the lip like to produce a sound similar to a cup gong or bell plate. Or, fill the gong with a little bit of water and hold the gong in your palm. you can create eerie pitch bend sounds as you strike the gong lip.

The pitchbend on this is higher and more subtle than an opera, but also more expressive. The right strikes can make the pitchbend drag out for longer, start lower and/or go higher, just like an opera gong - but this can also be crashed so the sound fully unfolds instantly, making anything from shimmering bell-like tones to brash, saw-like washes at fortissimo. The samples only show part of what it's capable of. If you're eyeballing it... go for it, it's one of the least expensive gongs on SWM. Also, I should note that, like the opera gong, they do come strung on a rope. The description seemed ambiguous and the photos are cropped, but rest assured, they're ready to hang when you unbox them.
