Shells

Ludwig’s shells are the element most responsible for the “Ludwig Sound”. Crafted in a process honed through over a century of drum making, Ludwig’ drum shells use hand-selected, cross-laminated veneers and are built in-house with meticulous attention to detail. Ludwig drums are available in sizes 6″–26″ and in a variety of graduated depths.

Ludwig produces all of its USA shells using “Radio Frequency Shell Technology,” which increases stability throughout the drum. R.F.S.T.’s bonding system—combined with a specialized, time-tested adhesive—cures each shell evenly over the entire surface of the shell. This unique process is a fundamental component of the “Ludwig Sound.”

Bearing Edges

Each Classic Maple drum’s bearing edge is cut to a 45-degree angle within 1/16″ from the outside edge. A Ludwig craftsman hand-sands this sharp edge to assure a smooth, even, flat surface for perfect head seating.

Ludwig Legacy Shells

Bearing Edges

Legacy Exotic shells have a 30° inner cut with a 1/8″ radius round over. This edge produces a pure, well-rounded sonic footprint, retaining a more classic sound.
