  • Thomas Bruttger was born in Viersen/Germany in 1954 and studied music teaching and musicology, later composition with N.A. Huber at the Folkwang Hochschule Essen/Germany. Already during his course, he recieved the Folkwangprize for composition. Supported by a scholarship from the DAAD, he took a course in composition with Iannis Xenakis at the Sorbonne. At the same time he attended lectures in music analysis by Olivier Messiaen and Pierre Boulez. In 1985-88 he was editor at the publishing house Bärenreiter in Kassel/Germany, where he co-founded the "Kassel composers initiative" and organized numerous concert of national and international renown, e.g. as part of the "document IX" Since 1988 he teaches at the Folkwang Hochschule.
