This is one of my favorite pieces to perform! After a short introduction, the marimba introduces a beautiful and rhythmically interesting melody that gets echoed canonically by the vibraphone. This melody reappears in varied form through the piece. In one variation, the vibraphone and marimba play every other other note in hocket. At other points, the players perform the melody on concert toms. Interspersed between the occurrences of the opening tune are exciting passages for mallet and drum duet requiring great precision on the part of the two performers. In the final section of the piece a 5-chord arpeggiated pattern is played on the vibraphone and bells with each player constantly shifting the accents and metric subdivisions of the pattern. The effect is like the sound of multiple sets of wind chimes played simultaneously. Ancher Erectum is a unique piece that is accessible and keeps the audience's interest throughout. It is a great addition to any concert program!
