Butts - Five Drums in Drive

    Comments:

I played this piece in Grade 10 in 1978/79. All 5 members thought the piece was great and we really enjoyed playing our parts. It was also well received by the audience. Each part is easy to learn. As I recall snares, tenors, and temps are 1/4s, 8ths, and 16ths, with some syncopated rhythms, and I believe snares had some rolls as well - can't quite recall. Temps do a LOT of damping. I can't remember if there is any pitch changing. I don't think there is and I believe its for two tymp, maybe 3. Each part itself is not too difficult. By far the challenge is the call & answers vs the unisons. 40 years later, I am very glad to see this piece is available. If you have 5 players who are strong readers, and medium players, it is a very good piece for a percussion ensemble to learn. It's pretty quick, I'm remembering 140 or something like, or it could be we just cranked it.
