Quartetto was premiered on February 24, 1977 in Budapest, conducted be Oskae Balazs. This work is constructed in four parts and features a full spectrum of percussive sounds.

Sándor Balassa was born in Budapest, on 20 January 1935. He started his musical studies in the Béla Bartók Conservatory at age 17, and studied composition under Endre Szervánszky at the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music, obtaining a diploma in 1965.
