Nice head! Exactly what I want on my practice pad.

Comments:

I have a Drumslinger Percussion practice pad that originally came with an Evans Strata 1000 head. The pad is amazing & I love love love it . . . however, I'm not super in love with the Evans Strata 1000. As most have pointed out, the Strata 1000 coating wears / flakes off pretty easily, and I am fairly OCD about coating wear & appearance. Reviews of Aquarian's coated heads touted them as having one of the more durable coatings. Additionally, I liked the off-white / tan color and the understated logo of the Modern Vintage heads. So I opted for one of these heads on a "whim" to see how they feel & how they hold up to daily rudimental snare drum practice. The coating is pretty rough. Much rougher say than a Remo Ambassador, but not sandpaper by any means. The playing area started to smooth out after a few hours of practice, and it's holding pretty steady thus far. I don't anticipate it wearing out any time soon or showing too much dirt from stick marks. As for the sound, I can't tell you how the head will sound on your drumset since mine is mounted on a practice pad. But it gives a nice dry & articulate sound from the pad, maybe even more dry & articulate than the Strata 1000 gave. Overall I'm glad that I got the head, and if it wears out (not likely) I'll probably get another.

Great drumhead!!

Comments:

I put the Modern Vintage Thin head on a 5x14" Ludwig Supraphonic Brass snare drum about four years ago. It tuned up easily and has required very little tuning maintenance since. It still sounds and feels great. It has plenty of attack, but with a smooth warmth that makes the metal shell sound very pleasing. This head is easy to play with nuance and musicality because the stick response consistently parallels the sound that comes out, according to the kind of stroke you make and the spot on the head that you play. Responsive when played loud, articulate when played soft, and great with brushes. The textured surface lasts way longer than the standard spray coating on other heads, so you continue to get great brush response. Love it for any style of music. I'm gonna try them on an entire kit soon!
