Cahn-Music of the Spheres (2S)-DS/VX/prerecorded audio - Product Information

Music of the Spheres by William L. Cahn was composed in August/September, 2016 for Morris Palter, who premiered the work at the University of Arizona on April 29, 2017. It is scored for drumset and vocalist (female or male) reciting an original verse by the composer, accompanied by prerecorded music. The title refers to a philosophical/cosmological concept proposed by the ancient Greek mathematician, Pythagoras, whose experiments in the 5th century BCE revealed profound numerical relationships among the musical tones produced by vibrating strings. To Pythagoras these relationships were perceived as revelations into the nature of the universe, with mathematics providing a unifying structure that could also be applied to his observations of the regular movements of stars and planets in the heavens. Over the centuries this concept of a heavenly harmony has taken on an appealing mystical (if not scientific) significance to philosophers and cosmologists, and it still exerts an influence on musicians today.

Number of players: 2
Difficulty: Advanced

Instrumentation:

Drumset – A standard 'Be-Bop' drumset (bass drum with pedal, snare drum, small tom-tom, and floor tom-tom) is suggested; suspended cymbal(s) and/or hi-hat are optional. However, the drumset may be configured with the additions of more tom-toms or other percussion instruments, as the drumset player prefers.

Vocalist - The vocalist may be female or male. It is suggested that the vocalist speak into a microphone, and that the sound be amplified separately from the Pre-recorded CD – either through a separate loudspeaker placed on the stage (preferred) or through the house public address system.

Pre-recorded Audio – It is suggested that the Pre-recorded audio (digital download or CD) be played through a loudspeaker (or an integrated guitar amplifier) placed on the stage just behind the performers. The volume level should be low – audible but well below the combined volume levels of the voice and drums.
