Chen-Jing Marimba-M - Product Information
Commissioned by marimbist Nancy Zeltsman (via ZMF New Music, a project of Zeltsman Marimba Festival, Inc.), Jing Marimba by Chen Yi uses characteristic melodic phrases from traditional Beijing opera, building an overall musical structure carfully based on Golden Mean proportions. This provides a structural map in the composer's preface to illustrate the carefully-planned ratios in the musical form.
The primary motive of this 4-minute work is drawn from a fragment of the typical Beijing Opera fiddle's pattern, leaping a Minor 7th interval in accompanying the operatic singing. The "Jing" in the title refers to Beijing.
Jing Marimba was premiered by Gordon Stout in Appleton, WI on July 5, 2009 at the Zeltsman Marimba Festival.
Difficulty - Grade 4-5 (intermediate)
Instrumentation - Solo Marimba (4-mallets, 5.0 octave)
