An ideal book for the drummer to follow the actual drum parts used on the recording, or for singers who wish to sing along (minus Frank).

This book is excellent! It's exactly as described: the charts for the arrangements you on the included recording. Irv's pencil marks have been retained, where there were in-studio changes, or where he wanted to add info for himself. The recording is PERFECT, TEXTBOOK demonstration of how to interpret charts with a big band, and Cottler's performance sounds and feels great. Any student of jazz, big band, or "pop" music drumming would be wise to spend time studying his interpretation and emulating his sound. The only thing that might make this set better is if the recording included drumless play-along tracks, although there is something valuable to be gained by playing with Irv Cottler! For a great intro for new jazz band drummers, I'd pair this up with Bobby Gabriele's Chart Reading Workbook. Bobby explains the concepts and provides exercises with play-alongs, and Irv plays those concepts in real musical context.
