Comments:

This grade 6 solo, written for a 4 drum multi-tenor drum, offers a both a decent and enjoyable challenge. The piece moves through various movements, with various highlights and challenges, such as the fast 6/8 section, the accelrando pattern, and the final challenging sixtuplets run. Cues for simple visuals (stick flips and twirls) are also written in. The solo really is only marred by poor writing in a few sections. The solo uses a baffling amount of notation - various note heads for crossovers, rimshots, stick clicks, and back-sticking. In particular, one section requires a confusing pattern of stick clicks that doesn't sound quite write; in addition, backsticking as a whole barely produces and audible sound on tenors. And finally, on multiple occasions, crossovers were not notated in numerous spots where they should have been. Overall, however, Crash Landing is a varied, thoroughly enjoyable, and moderately challenging tenor solo. Sweeps and crossovers are kept at a minimum, but the combination of cleverly written sections, visual cues, and some decent challenges keeps the solo enjoyable. Just be ready to be confused by the strange notation.
