Innovative Chris Lamb Orchestral Series CL-X9 Barrel-Shaped Rosewood Xylophone Mallets - Product Information

After more than two years of intense development, this exceptional collection of mallets takes clear aim at the unique timbre possibilities that one is able to create on the xylophone. The Christopher Lamb Orchestral Series xylophone mallets are constructed with individually engineered custom-molded cores with varying weights specific to each model, strategically placed in either the top or center of the mallet head to create optimum feel, balance, and sound. This series allows the player to experience the colorful, comically clever side of the xylophone’s character, as well as its cutting edge, powerhouse presence required in a concert hall. Take time to examine the wood on wood collection (made with Honduras rosewood cores) for an ever expanding point of view. Given the considerable magnitude of orchestral repertoire, the countless solo materials written for xylophone, along with the varieties of touch needed, these tools will help the player craft his or her desired sound.

The CL-X9 features a barrel-shaped Rosewood core (30mm) with a hearty feel that makes a statement.

Articulate but not overpowering

Comments:

I ordered these mallets last winter but have loved the 6 months I've spent with them. The length of the rattan shaft is just the right weight to control the large head of the mallet. The shaft also leans toward the stiffer end of rattan, which I hope will reduce any permanent bending as they age. As for sound, these mallets are in a league of their own. Every articulation is incredibly crisp and is followed by a rebound that feels springy but not unnatural. Their peak volume isn't as loud as a Lexan mallet but the articulation is more clear. The choice between the 2 depends on the piece being played. My one complaint is dents on the head. For the price that I'm paying I really hope that they will last for a long time. The dents on the head left by an acoustalon xylophone are worrying. However, I suppose that I'd rather wear down the $60 mallets instead of the $2400 xylophone. If you aren't playing forte/fortissimo passages (which are better suited for lexan or phenolic anyway) this shouldn't be a significant concern.

Excellent mallet!

Comments:

Upon ordering these mallets, I was nervous about the specs of them. I thought they might be TOO heavy, but thankfully this is not the case. The handle is a 12.5" thin rattan. The rosewood adds about an inch to the length, and is very nice wood. The sound..? Impeccable. Worth the money for sure.
