I've been studying in university for 3 years now, and my mallet tastes have developed quite a lot. I enjoyed using these in high school and during my first semester at college, however these lack a depth of sound. I've used many combinations of the 2s, 3s, and 4s, but they only really work for solo literature, and even then they are definitely not a first choice. The sound is, to be blunt, really thin, and many overtones are lost. These can be beneficial for some pieces, but I can't find a use for them anymore and they really just collect dust. Generally speaking, I find that the Zeltsmans, Van Sices, and the IP Arisan Series (formerly the Zivkovics), will cover virtually your every need as a marimbist

I love these and they have a pretty good range of sound and a nice length on the shaft that they're really good for concert usage and for certain solos, but I've found it's easier to get a softer tone than a harder tone with them. However, I also use the 3's and the 4's together, so maybe if I had two sets of 4's it'd be better. All in all they're my favorite set of mallets I've used so far this year.

These are light mallets. Once you get used to it the feel it's great. When increasing velocity the attack increases. Striking the mallet normally there is no attack which gives it a full warm bright sound. The shaft looks shorter, but its not. The elongated head makes it look like that. The lower part of the marimba is beautiful all around. Higher part of the marimba can sound dull, but once you increase the velocity the sound is great.
