Shostakovich-Introduction, The Limpid Stream" arr. Saleh (SP)-V/2M" - Product Information

Introduction, "The Limpid Stream" from Ballet Suite No. 4 by Dmitri Shostakovich arranged for percussion quartet by Peter Saleh. This arrangement was written for the Rutgers Youth Percussion Ensemble in it's inaugural year (2000) and edited for RYPE's 10-year anniversary.

This score, unlike most arrangements of concert music, was done completely by ear due to the difficulty in acquiring the orchestral score. This rendition distilled the full orchestral instrumentation down to a marimba quartet with the added texture of a vibraphone played with yarn marimba mallets and blocked resonators – both rarities for normal playing of the instrument. Obligato passages were added to aid in making the material sound more idiomatic to the instruments. The composition itself, written in 1953, is a passacaglia, a piece that utilizes a repeated theme heard in the beginning and throughout its duration. The primary 8-bar theme here actually originally comes from another Russian composer's earlier work so one could say Shostakovich's composition was also an arrangement of sorts. Fans of DCI will also recognize this piece as being the opening on the 1996 Phantom Regiment "Defiant Heart" show.
