Kihle-Barrier-4T

Barrier by Jason Kihle presents a variety of challenges to the performer, including mixed and odd meters, left hand ostinato while the right hand plays melody, and a short legato chorale. These sections contrast the interspersed presentations of the melody before the final recap. In places the composer asks for the performer to play on the rim, center, or normal beating spot, using the notation system from Elliot Carter's Eight Pieces for Four Timpani. There are no pitch changes required. This work is appropriate for the advanced high school or college timpanist. Barrier is dedicated to the composer's percussion teacher, Gray Barrier, at the University of Northern Colorado.
