Ludwig Concert Toms - Single Head - Product Information

Ludwig Concert Toms incorporate many upgraded features to accommodate the needs of modern percussionists and performance ensembles. These single headed toms are constructed with hand-selected 7-ply, 6mm North American Maple wood for full-bodied tone and bright attack. The bearing edges are cut to a single 45-degree angle within 1/16" from the outside edge to allow a wide tuning range and maximum sustain. Remo Clear Ambassador heads come standard for ideal projection and resonance right out of the box. The 2.3mm triple-flanged, chrome-plated steel rims promote stable, accurate tuning, and increased durability. Each drum is equipped with Ludwig Mini Classic lugs, which have a smaller profile and show off the finish. An upgraded Atlas Triad mounting system allows for flexible, secure positioning without compromising sound quality.

The Ludwig Concert Toms are available in eight sizes and can be purchased individually or in sets. Each set of toms comes with two heavy-duty LAP441TS Atlas Pro Double Tom Stands, which are double-braced for increased stability. The Atlas Pro Double Tom Stand also has an available clamp for mounting cymbal booms and other percussion instruments or hardware as needed.

Comments:

There's been a long debate over whether single-headed or double-headed concert toms sound better, and I think the ultimate factor is the sound you're looking for. Traditionally, single-headed toms have produced a punchier sound with a quicker decay, while their counterparts have a much more rounded and resonant sound dude to having a second head that vibrates sympathetically. I've always preferred the latter, since you have much, much more control over the tuning and resonance. I've found that no matter what type of head I put on these shells, I've never been able to get a sound that I like, even if I physically alter the head (moon gels, tape and pads, etc.), but if short and punchy and empty is the sound you're looking for, then these drums work. Maybe you'll have more luck than me. The reason that I've only given this product two stars is Ludwig's mounting system. I've found that over time, the set screw that secures the mounting block to the post no longer holds position, and you have to use the tiny memory clamp to fully support and maintain the rotation of the drum, and even still, the tab/notch isn't a snug fit, so the drum will still rotate. The mounting plate, which is secured to the shell by two in line screws will loosen and the shell will rock back and forth when the drum is struck, and even when they're cranked as tight as possible the drum still won't stay still. Other than that, the shells are rock solid, the lugs are great, and if you have a ton of money lying around, go for it.
