Ludwig Neusonic Drums

Front shot of a Ludwig Neusonic drum set.

Being a team of drummers and percussionists, you can imagine the water cooler talk at Steve Weiss Music is just a little different. So when a team member is getting ready to make the purchase of a new drum kit...word gets around. In the average office, it might not be as easy to make conversation out of saying, “I’m thinking of buying a set of Ludwig Neusonics.” But that’s what we did, and this is what we learned.

Neusonics at a glance

  • 6-ply maple/cherry blend (3 outer maple plies, 3 inner cherry plies)
  • 45 degree bearing edge with a 1/16″ back cut for optimal sustain
  • American Made
  • High quality Ludwig hardware and craftsmanship
  • Pro Beat, Fab, and Downbeat Sizes, with add on options

American Made

Did you know that Ludwig Neusonic drums are made in America? Offering three high quality finishes, these drums are created from start to finish at the Ludwig factory in Monroe, North Carolina. While most American made drums with these options have a heavy price point, the Neusonic range of drums offers a more affordable alternative with tons of features that normally are priced at a premium. You can find all of our offerings from Ludwig Drums here.

Shell Composition

Drummers love maple, and so does Ludwig! Their Ludwig Classic Maple series is known for being a benchmark for high quality drums. Maple is a go to wood for its balance and tone, so it's no wonder it is the standard. But who needs another pure maple drum kit, if you already have one? What is unique about the Neusonic series, is that it features a six ply maple/cherry blend, which creates a new sound palette. Is this a groundbreaking change from a six ply all maple shell? I bet you'd be surprised at the difference a more exotic tone wood like cherry makes. Coupled with maple, this unique pairing makes for a great expansion to your musical palette.

Size and Configurations

Offering a limited number of size options to keep your cost low, Ludwig has streamlined this series to fit three of their best selling configurations. The Pro Beat features a 24″ bass drum, 13″ rack tom, and 16″ floor tom, the Fab outfit features a 22″ bass drum, 13″ rack tom, and 16" floor tom, and the Downbeat outfit features a 20″ bass drum, 12″ rack tom, and 14″ floor tom. Each of these three piece shell packs also have options for additional add ons if you'd like to expand your shell pack. Pair your shell pack with either either the Ludwig Supraphonic Snare Drum or the Ludwig Black Beauty Snare Drum for a legendary and classic sound!

Snare Drum

A particular highlight to this range of drums is the snare drum option. Featuring one size, 14″ by 6.5″, the Ludwig Neusonic snare drum is a great addition to any player’s snare drum collection. Offering the great features of the rest of the line, it also features the ultra smooth Ludwig P-88AC Throw Off and Butt Plate. This drum is an affordable way to expand the tone of cherry into your snare drum sound.
