Very happy to find Ludwig heads instead of Remo's for my Supraphonic restorations. Remo makes fine heads, but I prefer "original equipment" on my Ludwigs.

Got no clue if Ludwig has a factory somewhere, they have Evans make them, or they come from Mexico or wherever. They are as well-constructed as any other manufacturer and seem consistent, so who cares about the rest. They were fitted to the 5 x 14" Black Beauty I bought many years ago; triple flange rims, tube-lugs, with smooth shell and of course, beautiful. I thought the head was noticeably heavier in feel, like a coated Ambassador, but 11mil, instead of 10. Not a problem just an impression. I also though they were a little "rubbery", compared to the Ambassadors. On the Black Beauty--a rather ringy drum, IMHO, they were great. Good sound, dynamic range, tuning response for phat to cracky--no real complaints, except sometimes I thought the drum a little dead sounding. I got into trouble replacing the Ludwig batter and reso with the standard Remo snare setup (coated Ambassador batter, Hazy reso) and the darn thing rang terribly at all tunings. Die-cast rims really helped, but I had better luck with Evans' ST Dry and the triple flange hoops. No real problems with the Ludwig heads, but if you want a Black Beauty, you might need to have a little Edison in your blood...
