Malletech Hinger Aluminum Timpani Mallets - Complete Set - Product Information

This specially priced pre-pack of the Malletech Aluminum Handle Hinger Timpani Mallets includes one pair of each of the four available models at a reduced package sale price.

The patented weight system on aluminum handles allows the performer to instantly adjust the feel, balance, and sound characteristics of the mallet. Sliding the weights forward produces the fundamental tone response of a much heavier stick. The 5/8″, thin-wall aluminum shaft has the lightness of a bamboo handle, the stiffness of a hardwood handle and the consistency pair-to-pair that only a man-made product can achieve.

These mallets incorporate some of Fred Hinger’s patented design features which set them apart from any other mallets on the market today. The felt is glued onto the mallet heads instead of sewn. This significant improvement over the “parachute style” sewn head eliminates any air pockets that might cause the mallet to slap. It also prevents the uneven bunching up of felt near the stitches.

Throughout his long distinguished career, Fred Hinger served as timpanist with both the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra in New York City. He was one of the most innovative players, teachers and product designers in the history of percussion. His students hold positions in major orchestras, chamber groups and teaching positions around the world.

This set includes 1 each:

  • PC1S-Soft

Essential Mallets

Comments:

If you play in the Hinger style (going out of fashion these days), these mallets are essential. Made of higher quality aluminum alloy than the original models, these don't warp after playing triple-forte a few times. They do still dent if you really whack them on a lug or something, but they are really very robust, and I've not had much problem, especially on drums without protruding lugs. The adjustable weight is a great feature, and the grips are slightly rough so they don't slip. They give good wear on smooth plastic or true calf heads, but watch out for faux calf, which tends to eat the felt. Adams heads, in particular, really chew the heads off these. Overall, though, an excellent, well-designed, responsive product.

Best mallets I've used, but the heads wear out

Comments:

These are excellent mallets that feel and sound great. As a previous reviewer remarks, they dent easily, but I don't care about that. These mallets have two unique good features and one irritating one: The first unique & good feature is the piece of rubber (same material as the handle) that can be moved to adjust balance. It is an incredibly useful feature that I use all the time and have never seen on any other mallet. The second nice feature is that the handles, made by the same rubbery material, sounds very good when used to strike the drums. It's like having a nice set of wood mallets available just by flipping whatever mallet you're using. It's surprisingly how often that's useful. Finally, the one feature that's not so great: The felt wear quite easily. This is particularly annoying for the two types of mallets with the least felt. They sound great when you first buy them, but after only a few months of use the felt is so thin that the mallets are close to useless. For the larger mallets this is not as noticeable. Had the felt been a bit more durable the aluminium Hinger mallets would been very close to the perfect timpani mallets, as it is they are simply very very good mallets.

Love these mallets

Comments:

Light weight, and well balanced. Very long mallets as well. But be careful, they will dent very easily (doesn't effect the sound any just the aesthetics). I would highly recommend these mallets!
