Marimba One Double Helix DHR4 Medium Rattan Mallets - Product Information

The Double Helix Series was developed to bring out the warmth of the fundamental throughout the range of the 5-octave marimba. The relaxed yarn tension on these mallets enhances the smooth, dark attack of the mallet.

The exclusive patent pending “double helix wrap” technique allows you to easily identify each mallet in the series. Two strands of yarn are wrapped independently of each other, creating a woven effect. After one of the strands makes a revolution around the mallet head, the other strand makes a revolution, securing the previous strand. This locks the yarn in place and prevents it from unraveling. This unique method of wrapping provides our mallets with their distinct look, and exceptional sound.

Good, but not what they used to be.

Comments:

The Double Helix mallets have been a personal favorite for a while. I've had the birch ones for about a year, and just recently switched to rattan. I do like these mallets, however, Marimba One's quality and craftsmanship has significantly declined over the past year (or longer). Rattan diameter is not always consistent within pairs or even along the shaft. When you order rattan mallets from Marimba One, you simply do not know what you're going to get. I bought two pairs, and pretty much everything is different between the two pairs except sound quality. This, of course, is what matters the most, and so issues like inconsistent head size, low quality rattan, and cases of head clicking (which I haven't experienced yet with these pairs, but others have - most commonly on DHR3/DHB3s) are just minor (or sometimes major) annoyances. If you're looking for a pair of mallets that sound excellent and will last a long time, these are for you. If you aren't willing to deal with some rattan sizing and consistency issues, then you may want to turn elsewhere. It pains me to write this review after being so fond of Marimba One for their superior quality and attention to detail, but times have changed and they are not the company they once were. Summary: Given 4/5 for good sound quality, but poor craftsmanship and consistency.

Great mallets for lower register

Comments:

I bought these mallets for a chorale-style solo, and they work great, with very little contact sound. They are weighted very nicely, especially with the rattan, for a full tone from C2 all the way until around G4.
