Pearl Concert Series Snare Drum - Maple 14x5.5 - Product Information

Pearl's Concert Series Snare Drums offer the performance of a true professional quality instrument, at a fraction of the price.

The Concert Series Snare Drums combine the look, sound, and innovation of a high end orchestral drum, with a price well within any school or individual budget.

Features like a 7.5 mm thick, warm and resonant 100% all Maple shell, classic styled tube lugs, Pearl's acclaimed 2.3 mm SuperHoop II rims, and Remo Renaissance heads, insure you that no construction detail has been overlooked, and a beautiful, highly polished lacquer finish allows this instrument to look right at home on any stage or performance venue from school band, to professional use.

At the core of the new Concert Snare drum's design is an innovative mix of cable snares, specifically designed to provide a Seamless Timbral Overlap, sonically excelling at every tonal response, from the softest musical passage, to the most dynamic high volume crescendo. Coated Snare Cable and Stainless Steel Snare Cable are uniquely angle mounted together on a single SR-400 Silent Strainer, a single assembly version of the world famous SR500 used on the Philharmonic Series drums.

Really good drum

Comments:

This seems to be basically the philharmonic ply shell. The snares are basically a non-adjustable (no fine tuning except for the global knob) set of coated and uncoated cable. I've got quite a few of the Pearl Philharmonic line as well as a slew of other brands including Clevelander, Hinger, GMS, Black Swamp and others. If tuned well, this drum sounds great, especially at the higher dynamics. It's not quite as sensitive at the low dynamics as the Philharmonic line (it still sounds fine), but I think it really comes into it's own at the louder volume levels. It has a "cutting glass" sound that a lot of multiple-strainer drums don't have. I use it in professional situations and I think for a school or student use, it would be ideal, since the student can't really screw it up. I did find out that the allen screw's holding the cables in place were not fully tightened. I did get them back in tension and tightened down. A freelancing colleague of mine (who also has one and is his main snare) found out that for some reason, it got MORE sensitive as you turned the snare tighter. You do need to address tuning on this drum, but if it's kept in tune, you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Nice But Not Great Snare Drum

Comments:

This is a pretty good snare, but its response when playing soft or close to the edge is very minimal, if anything at all. The biggest cause of this problem is that it only has one tension adjuster/strainer, making it difficult to play softly without losing its unique, "buzzy" snare sound. So, if you're looking for a snare drum that has a full, resonant sound when (only) playing loudly and close to the center, then this is the drum for you. However, if you're looking for a snare with well-rounded sensitivity at any volume level or location on drum head, then I would recommend upgading to the philharmonic series (where their triple tension adjuster/strainer designs allow the musician expressive dexterity).
