PLEASE NOTE- This is not a "gum rubber" pad. Its not a "Snare pad". It is not a "kevlar simulation" pad. Its meant for two purposes: 1) Truly QUIET practice This pad makes next to zero noise. I literally played this right outside of our 2 year old son's bedroom while he was asleep and you could not hear a thing. Drumming on a book with my fingers tends to annoy my wife, but she didn't say a word when I played this pad sitting next to her on the sofa. This means the drum surface, AND the rim. It is by far, the best quiet pad I have ever heard. 2) Make you WORK those chops! There is very little natural rebound. You have to apply great technique to play and this pad will definitely help you learn to really control the sticks. It will not do any of the work for you. If you can play rudiments, double strokes, fast passages with some proficiency on this pad, you probably have great control. The construction of this pad is great. A solid and beautiful wood base, a nice blue color on the pad, and a black rubber rim are all sturdy and look nice. There is also a rubber "particle board" bottom that keeps it from slipping off your lap, is also a harder and more audible drum surface. I do think this pad (like most today) are a bit too expensive, but in my opinion, this is worth the money. Great for those who really want to master technique, and for those who live in apartments or need a pad that is actually quiet!
