Rehmann-Between the Essence & the Descent-5T - Product Information
Between the Essence and the Decent is inspired by the poem The Hollow Men by T.S. Eliot. While not entirely programmatic, elements from the work influenced much of the piece.
The composition begins with a muddled soundscape from which the accented theme emerges. Once the theme has appeared, the muddled landscape subsides and a cleaner more aggressive variation comes forth. From there, the muddled soundscape reappears giving way to a lyrical middle where the timpanist can really shine with interpretation! Once more the muddled soundscape returns with what the audience will be led to believe is a bombastic conclusion, only to give way to a sudden, drastic reduction in energy and volume. Ending, "…Not with a bang but a whimper."
