If you want a vintage sound like the post-calf/early plastic heads, IMO this is it. Coupled with a felt strip placed under the head I can get a versatile tone for rock or jazz. For resonant side I use either a powerstroke type head with a port, which also allows adding more muffling pads if needed, or I use another single ply head with felt strip and it will be great for straight ahead jazz. A single ply batter will give a lot of beater attack/impact sound and a big resonance. I also use premuffled, deadened heads if the gig calls for it, but a single ply has a unique sound you cannot get with those. Steve Weiss Music is the best place to shop hands down. Better prices than other stores, too.
