Remo Ambassador Suede Drum Head

The Suede heads (along with the Renaissance heads) are, IMHO, some of the most interesting innovations since, well, Mylar. These heads have a surface that looks like they were scoured with coarse steel wool, top and bottom. They don't look like calf, but this treatment gives the heads a translucent appearance that might be what one would think stretched skin would look like. I originally installed them on a Pearl BRX birch kit about 2007, and found that, when used as both batter and reso, they seemed to even out the frequency response of the drums. Birch under conventional heads has great high and low response, with a diminished mid-range, making them the joy of studio and house engineers who usually need to boost the treble and bass for a better sound. At home though, birch isn't a real warm sound, like maple. The Suede heads seemed to level out the response of the birch drums, bringing up the midrange noticeably--without making the birch kit sound like something else. They are quite resonant, and I often threw a Studio Ring on the heads when the got ringy-sounding in the particular venue. Never wore off the finish, as it is a treatment of the film--not a coating. They project well, and are a nice snare head, as the surface works fine with brushes.
