a concert band head good for playing jazz brushes

Comments:

Yes, I fully understand that this is a concert band drum head. But just because that is what it was intended for, does not necessarily mean that is the only way in which it can be used. Recently I tested four Remo textured drumheads for jazz brush sensitivity: Diplomat Coated M5 (5 mil.), Conventional Diplomat Coated (7.5 mil.), Diplomat Fiberskyn (10.5 mil.) and Ambassador Suede (10 mil.). The Diplomat M5 provided the greatest brush response, followed by the more conventional Diplomat Coated. Both of these drumheads have the textured surface SPRAYED on to a clear film. BOTH coated heads offer an 'even' brush surface, but they naturally slough off through normal playing. The Fiberskyn has 3 mil. of spun fiberglass permanently bonded to the clear film. It features a 'variable' brush surface, which sounds like a good idea on paper, but the reality is it's like trying to play brushes on a shiny sheet of wax paper. The Ambassador Suede also features an 'even' brush surface which is permanently bonded to the head (via proprietary UV process), which like the Fiberskyn, is a good deal less percussive and therefore, much less responsive. So, in terms of brush response, going loudest to softest, Diplomat M5, then Diplomat Coated, then Ambassador Suede, and finally Diplomat Fiberskyn is the least responsive. All four heads were tested on the exact same snare drum with the exact same pair of brushes. Naturally, your results may be different.

Underrated

Comments:

This head by Remo is very underrated and can be used in many different styles of playing. Durability will be a issue if you tune your snare drum low to medium tuning but If you crank your snare like me it's great. It will give you incredible bounce feel and more durability cranked down tighter. Dare to be different give it a try.

Clear, sensitive, articulate

Comments:

This is the only plastic head I put on snare drums. It has the texture to create good friction sounds with brushes etc. and a remarkable sensitivity for shallower drums.

The Remo Diplomat M5 coated snare drum batter drum

Comments:

It goes without saying that the M5 is the best orchestral snare drum head available. I have tried ALL the others. While it is manufactured for 13" and 14" drums, I wish it were also made for 12" snare drums.
