I am Director of Worship Arts at my church. My wide range of duties include maintaining our drum set. Volume control of worship drums has been a challenge. We've used a combination of "O" Rings, gel dampening, tape, control heads, overlays, rods, sticks and even a drum screen. Each of those have benefits but come with sacrifices. Muff'l Rings have provided the best solution. We're using them on 12, 13 and 16" toms and our 14" snare. They do a great job of controlling volume by reducing sustain but still allow the toms to have a nice deep sound and the snare to have the fat sound popular in worship music these days. Muff'l Rings are easy to install and since they don't attach to the drum are easy to remove when changing heads. I highly recommend Muff'l Rings.

I've had two Muffles in my 20" kick for 20+ years (no, not both on the batter head ;-)) and they've kept my sound consistent the whole time. This one was to help tame a new 22" "travel kick" I built, and it does not disappoint. (The head does, but that's another issue.)
The Remo Muffles are superior to every other approach I've tried for focusing my kick sound (tape, patches, pillows, blankets) in that they do just enough, stay consistent (same shape/pressure, exactly in the same place) after transport, and don't peel/fall off mid-show.
(That said, my 20yo pair is probably getting to the point where the foam will start crumbling in a meaningful way.)

Muff'l or Powerstroke?

I bought two 16" Remo Ring Control Muff'ls to go with the Diplomat FiberSkyn bass-drum heads on my new Ludwig Breakbeats miniature jazz kit because the Felt Tone Powerstroke head is not available as a 16". I'd used Muff'ls on 20" and 24" bass drums until Remo introduced the Felt Tone heads and was afraid they might muffle the 16" heads too much, but they sound great: warm, resonant, and concise.
