Savage-Savage Rudimental Workshop (w/2CD) - Product Information

The "Savage" Rudimental Workshop was written with the intend on providing a new way to learn and development rudiments. This unique book is a state-of-the-art resource for developing total control of the 40 Percussive Arts Society rudiments with immediate results -- and in a musical context. Each rudiment includes a collection of short exercises and solos, allowing the player to understand how each rudiment is put together and how it can be played in the most efficient and controlled manner utilizing the particular skills learned. The two CDs include selected exercises with the rudiment solo and accompaniment for each, plus ten groove tracks for use with the exercises. For beginning to advanced players.

Matt Savage Rudimental Workshop

Comments:

In his Rudimental Workshop, Matt Savage lays out a comprehensive and most welcome overview of the 40 Percussive Arts Society snare drum rudiments. He deconstructs each focusing on the roles played by right and left hands, stroke structure (the combination of stickings and the stroke types employed) and, in his introduction, the mechanics-wrist motions, controlled bounces, fingers impetuses-implicit in execution. Savage devotes a chapter in Workshop to each rudiment, presenting it in a sequence of progressive exercises that culminate in a concluding etude. Originally-composed rudimental solos, suitable for performance in juries or playing exams, comprise the last session of Rudimental Workshop. A challenging aspect of these etudes is in their sometimes non-intuitive stickings, planned by Savage to balance ability equally in both hands while being at odds with traditional stickings as found in solos by Charlie Wilcoxson and John Pratt. Savage states that Rudimental Workshop is appropriate "for beginning to advanced players." A percussionist and percussion teacher since the 1970s and preparing to use Savage's book in an upcoming semester of applied college instruction, I find my own understanding and playing of rudiments improving. The flam rudiment chapters are particularly effective. Savage may have improved his method book with more nuanced emphasis on hand relaxation and, especially, the fluid blending of wrist and finger impetus, which are as fundamental to snare drum rudiments as their rhythms, stickings and stroke structures. In light of this, teachers may want to supplement their students' study of Rudimental Workshop with Charlie Wilcoxon's Wrist & Finger Control for the Advanced Drummer (when it again becomes available); and/or study, with an emphasis on combined wrist and finger control, of the George Lawrence Stone/Joe Morello Accents and Rebounds. Short of this, teachers and their students can keep Savage's etude "Relax and Roll With It" in their practice queues as finger control and fluidity increase. Gary A.
