Great Piece to Test Playing Abilities

Comments:

Wow! This piece really says it all. If timpani players get an opportunity to play this piece, whether it's high school or college, they shouldn't pass this opportunity up. Each movement in the piece really has their own interpretation, and when I look at it closely, I can see what John Beck wants in each movement. Movement 2 has been my biggest challenge thus far, but it's a working progress. Please buy this piece if you want to get better at timpani, and take a tuning fork to a competition with this.

Great starter timpani piece

Comments:

This is a great piece for the intermediate timpanist looking to explore a little in solo timpani works. I love that it incorporates so much extended technique. This piece allows you to play on the side of the bowls, in the middle of the drum, do stick shots, and play with your hands and fingers. I really enjoy the diversity throughout the movements. Another aspect that is really interesting is the theme in each movement. It seems as if each movements has a "groove" to it that builds and evolves, but is something that can really keep an audience interested and entertained.

Great Piece

Comments:

Just as the description entails, each movement of this piece explores different ways to play the instrument, from striking the bowls, to using fingertips, to glissandos and scales. I used this for college auditions and used the 2nd movement for a state solo competition earlier this year and can say both have been very successful. Wonderful sonata, and definitely very entertaining to experience.
