Vic Firth M171 Multi-Application Marimba Mallets are a medium yarn marimba mallet that is ideal across the full range of the instrument. Rubber core; birch shafts.

Developed with some of the very best drum corps during the 2004 DCI season, these mallets are great for drum corps, marching band, indoor marching, concert and solo playing. Good, but I'm having a hard time loving them

I've use these mallets for a while, and have a few comments on them. The first thing I noticed with these is that the head is much heavier than I expected. I've kind of gotten used to their heavier feel, but it's still awkward to do rolls an diddles with such forward-heavy mallets. That being said, these mallets do have a few merits: they produce a warm, resonant sound, which sometimes makes them sound muddy on quick, mid-range runs. They generally have a soft attack, but can get a little sharper when you ask for it. In summary, these mallets have some strong suits, but I personally am not loving them. If you buy them, keep in mind that they may be more head-heavy than you are used to.
