Prior to joining the WCU faculty in 1979, he taught in the public schools of Ballston Spa, NY, and Portsmouth, VA. He holds a B.M. degree from the Crane School of Music, State University of New York at Potsdam, an M.M. degree from East Carolina University and a D.M.A from the University of Memphis. His principal teachers included James Petercsak, Harold Jones and Frank Shaffer.
