I have been using Remo Renaissance heads on my 1960s & 1970s Ludwig and Slingerland toms for several years now. They seem to have more elasticity then the standard coated Ambassador heads giving the a warmer sound with less stick hit sound. I have also used them on Roto toms.

Got the Remo Ambassador Renaissance heads for the toms (13, 16 & 18) on both of my sets (practice set and gig set). Really like the sound, a little more controlled perhaps than a regular single ply rough-coat head, but still a pretty open/resonant sound. But this purchase was a replacement. Kept having problems tuning/balancing the head on the mounted tom of my practice set. Finally realized that the head had pulled out of the hoop. And the head was still relatively new. ? I've been playing the drums for over 50 years, never had that happen before. Mostly used Ludwig heads. Hopefully, it was just a fluke. So far all of the other heads are fine. Will see.

I use the Remo Renaissance heads on concert bass drums, concert snare drums (with a thin Diplomat snare side head) and on Remo roto toms. I know folks who use them on drum set, especially for drum sets used in a variety of situations such as pit and church work. I have not tried that but would not be surprised if that was a good choice. I also use Diplomat snare side heads on the bottom of tom toms on a jazz drum set and Remo Tablatone heads on half of my roto toms.

Like the Suede heads, these are quite unique heads, as are Evans' J1s--though a different animal. More like a cousin to the Suede heads. Where the Suedes look like clear Mylar film was scoured with coarse steel wool, these appear to have had a coating that was textured in some way. They are a slightly warmer off-white color than the Suedes and rather less translucent. Whatever the surface treatment actually is, it is applied to both the top and underside of the head. I found they resonate extremely well when one fits them as both batter and reso, of equal weights. That said, by using a Diplomat reso with an Ambassador batter, you can control tom resonance well. Using an Emperor over an Ambassador on my 16" floor tom gives excellent low-end thunder, with controlled ruuummmmmmbbble. The Renaissance heads generally respond a bit more darkly at about the same tension than the Suedes, with a tad less sustain, but that's only MHO. Maybe the half the difference between a coated Ambassador and a Vintage A..? Only had one problem: I tried a Renaissance Ambassador batter over a Renaissance snare side on a 5 x 14" Black Beauty. Bad idea: the drum rang like a bell! I tried replacing the triple-flange hoops with die-cast, with only slight improvement. I had much better luck with a coated Ambassador over a Hazy Snare Side and the die-casts--but I digress. These heads are used on concert drums a lot and there's good reason. I'd try one as a batter on your 12 or 13" tom as a test and proceed as your ears tell you.

I personally use this head on my drum set because it allows me to get a good concert snare tone out of it, but with a small tuning change, I can make it sound great for drum set! I love it because it's bright but not too bright which allows me to get a ton of color out of my rim shots! Not only that, but they sound good with brushes too! Maybe not as rough as the coated heads but one thing I have noticed is that the coating does wear away as much as the white coated head. Great head!

I have been loving the sound of these heads on concert snares and timpani so I decided to try these on my toms and snare at home. These heads feel great and sound amazing on drum set.
