Evans hybrid snare side damage

Comments:

I currently tech at a high school and we have standard pearl 14" x 12" marching free floaters with the stock black outer shell. The damage is not as pronounced as the pics of the guys carbonply, but is still unacceptable! It has the white protective ring on the head and did not prevent the damage. Evans! Please recall!

Damages bearing edge

Comments:

Purchased and installed on my new Yamaha SFZ. After reading some horror stories about how damaging this head can be to the bearing edge, I inspected mine to discover that it's damaged my brand new drum, also. Evans needs to DISCONTINUE AND RECALL this head!! And a lower bearing edge job on my SFZ would be pretty awesome, too...

Didn't like this one

Comments:

I put this on (with Evans Hybrid on batter) a Yamaha snare, and did not like the sound. I switched to the MX5 and was very pleased. I found this head to be VERY dry.

Follow-Up to Previous Review

Comments:

After contacting Evans about the issue I had with this head damaging my bearing edge on my Pearl 14" FFX Carbonply, sending very detailed pictures of said damage, they were VERY sincerely apologetic, and that very day set up a Fed-Ex pick up of the drum's shell to be repaired at NO cost to me. After lengthy discussions with Pearl and Evans, we have come to the conclusion that the Mahogany on the Carbonply, which is a much softer wood than Maple and Birch, is simply too soft to handle this particular head. The very first run of this Evans Hybrid Reso did not have the white ring it currently has, which acts as a buffer between the fibers in the head and the bearing edge of the shell. Apparently this ring is a sufficient "buffer" for Maple and Birch, but unfortunately not for Mahogany. I have heard accounts of no problems with Maple or Birch, but several with Mahog. The head sounded AMAZING however in the short time it lived on my drum. I am really disappointed that I wasn't able to keep it on. I would easily rate the head a 5, but am only giving it a 4, because I'm bitter that I can't use it any more. :)

Great Product!

Comments:

I first bought this head based on the reviews offered by Mike McIntosh, Thom Hannum, and Jim Campbell. I haven't regretted the decision at all. We have Yamaha drums and the heads have been fabulous. Even incoming students who balk at the sound when they first see them have been silenced! I highly recommend this head. Thank you Evans for bringing back the snare sound!

Never A Problem Here

Comments:

I read the recent review of this product from the person claiming that this head ruined his Pearl Carbon Ply Drums after just 20 minutes of being on the drum. Not that I question that "evaluation" but I can tell you from first hand experience using these bottom heads for the last three years in the University Drumline where I teach, these heads are incredible sounding and are long lasting and we have had absolutely no problems with any of the heads or our drums......we have Pearl drums also. If we want to point a finger at a possible shortfall on this product, let's point the finger at Evans for the fact that they have not done a good enough job at letting customers know how truly different these Hybrid bottom heads are from anything else on the market and the fact that they need to be treated differently than your normal Kevlar or Mylar style drumhead. When used correctly, this head will have nothing but positive results to your overall snare line sound.

This head RUINED the bearing edge on my FFX

Comments:

I put this head on my new 14" Pearl Championship FFX Carbonply, then took it off no more than 20 minutes later after a friend expressed his concern about it damaging the bearing edge of the drum. The head was only tuned to a medium tuning, and had not been tuned any higher. I took the head off, and found that EVERY strip of the fiber had dug itself into the bearing edge. This is a MAJOR design flaw!! The damage is so significant that the bearing edge now rips mylar resos while tuning. I am VERY disappointed and disheartened that Evans would knowingly selling this product which very clearly damages the snare's bearing edge. I feel there is NO WAY POSSIBLE that during testing Evans did not encounter this issue. I have contacted Evans about the issue, and am awaiting their response. Shame on you Evans!!!

The Evans Hybrid system offers 'crunch' and clarity; 'playability' and projection; durability with a versatile tuning range. It's the best of both worlds!
