For the size of this beautifully made drum, it packs a lot of sound. I like how each head provides a different sound and it's a beautiful drum. I use for sound healing and sound baths and it's definitely people's favorite!! I will be buying more instruments from this company!

Very pleased with the 14" ocean drum. Like the slighttly different pitches due to the different thickness
of each of the 2 skins. Very high quality materails. Looks good. Fits perfectly inside my 16" frame drum
for easy transport inside the same carrying bag. Jim O'Connor promptly responded to the several questions
before purchase. Would also recomend that those who sufer from chronic pain like I do can benefit from
the soothing sounds and by watching the BBs. It takes your mind off the pain. Also good for meditation.
The 14" sustains the sound just fine for my purposes and the volume is spot on for the size of my residence.
Should you play in a larger venue you may want one of the larger ones but mine is plenty loud without blasting
my ear drums. Very cool.

Ocean drums are always louder than people expect and I'm super pleased with the 12" drum I received. I wasn't expecting calf skin on both sides! That was a bonus and the decoration on the side is lovely. The drum sounds fantastic. It responds quickly allowing for subtle movements and control. The waves can crash when I want them to. Hands-down would recommend.

Great Instrument - Big Sound!

This is a high quality instrument which produces the characteristic ocean drum sound that you're looking for. I purchased the 16 inch size, for an 8-person percussion ensemble piece, and that turned out to be a little on the big side - it puts out a lot of volume for a chamber setting. For larger groups and venues, this size would probably work well.

Does exactly what it says it will do, sounds like waves breaking on the shore. Warning; it is louder than I expected, don't plan to play this as a sound effect behind someone speaking, the drum pitch is about where the voice sits and makes speech unintelligible.
Starting to play with it as a large drum with built in rattles.

Natural but Too Loud!

I had originally bought the blue plastic sided Toca ocean drum. It had a cap and fill. Though it was synthetic, it was quiet when you picked it up. I had lost it (turns out I left it at a club that I recently played at and it is now in my possession again).
I bought this a few weeks ago. It is bigger, more affordable and there's 2 different animal skin thicknesses for different sounds. Even though I have a sensitive condenser, every time I try and quietly pick it up (i lay it resting on a side by my toys), it's too freaking loud when i level it and start using it.
This is the sole reason for my rating and I need to return it, too loud!

After going to my first session of drumming the end of the session the leader pulled out her Ocean drum and what can I say but this was so awesome I had to have one... did a google search and found Steve Weiss drums and order one. Came in perfect condition and been working with it ever since.
