Remo Traditional Kanjira

The traditional Indian kanjira was made using skin of the now-endangered Monitor Lizard. Remo's synthetic Skyndeep® lizard-graphic drumhead is an ecological tribute to the beauty of the Monitor Lizard. For its tunable kanjira, Remo attaches its...

Remo Kanjira

Comments:

I've played S.Indian kanjira for 40 years and bought the initial production Remo Kanjira sounding very good compared to native lizard skin used traditionally. Useful for playing near the ocean (humidity) and travel ease. Early Remo version mock lizard decal on head says REMO enclosed within crown icon and small print Made by Remo U.S.A.. Inside bearing edge was matching wood to the shell. Newer Remo Kanjira version head is similar but clearly imprinted with the word "Skyndeep", tactile scale rougher and thinner sounding. Remo also changed the inside bearing edge to a BLACK plastic composite likely contributing to a ringer less warm sound vs original Remo production. If you don't own a Kanjira or travel across borders etc. buy the newer Remo but if more discriminating Kanjira player try locating earlier Remo version or go to India!

Bravo

Comments:

Remo really got it right with this kanjira. It sounds and plays beautifully. The head feels quite a bit like the traditional lizard skin head. Having a synthetic, tunable, non-endagered species head is a huge bonus. Nice price point too. Highly recommended!

Great drum!

Comments:

The drum is everything people say it is.. Hands down. The only problem I have is that, the tuning key that is shown in the picture is NOT at all the tuning key you receive.. The one I got is a flimsy, low budget tuning key.

Spock split his fingers wrong

Comments:

I'm sure purists will scoff, but as a "drummer" who dabbles in frame drums, I think this is a great instrument. It is a real step up in craftsmanship from a lot of Remo percussion. The shell does not look, feel, or sound like Acousticon, and the Skyndeep head also looks, feels, and sounds great. The jingles are a good size and are not obnoxious like they are on other kanjira I've played. The small 5/64" hex tuning key can be a little tricky to get lined up, but I don't foresee needing to tune very often--that's the whole allure of a synthetic head. This is an excellent choice in between the Bergamo and the Cooperman.

Comments:

I was very skeptic about synthetic skin Kanjira. But man I was so wrong this instrument is amazing. The skin is so great, it has a feel of a natural skin and the sound is pretty cool too. The wood work is ok, could be better. I am not a Carnatic Kanjira player I was looking for something that could have the sound of a real Lizard Skin and this is very close to it. Get one for yourself!!! Julian

Great!

Comments:

I really like the new REMO Kanjira. 1.) It sounds much more like a real kanjira than the John Bergamo 2.) The jingles suck on the Bergamo...they do not suck on this version. However the John Bergamo kanjira is a good drum (aside the jingle...tape them!) 3.) No need to deal with the pain of tuning a real kanjira (if you have one) and if you were wanting to buy a real kanjira in the states GOOD LUCK. Been to many stores from Chicago to New York and NO ONE carries a GOOD kanjira. They have 'real' ones...but they are absolutely horrible. Negative comment? It is a bit of a pain to tune with it's tuning mechanism because it uses a 5/64 inch tuning nuts that are hidden deep inside the shell...it's just a little bit annoying to try to get the tuning mechanism in the holes at times.. If you want a kanjira...and can't travel to India where you might or might not find a good drum (the lizard is endangered now and the quality can be severely LACKING)...then this is the kanjira for you. NOTE...I have never played the cooperman kanjira...so I can't compare the two...but this is cheaper
