Maybe it's because I've never played the Cooperman model, but I don't get what everyone's complaining about. Every other tunable riq I have held is heavier than this model. The jingles are very easy to control, and tuned high, the head has great definition. The texture of the head is very unique and it really doesn't feel synthetic to me. Tuning is easy and the wrench supplied has a lot of reach. I will be mounting this as part of a hand percussion set-up, and I can already tell this will work much better than the natural skin riq I was using previously.

This isn't a multi-hundred dollar instrument, therefore it's not going to play like a multi-hundred dollar instrument. However I don't quite understand all the negativity in these reviews.. This instrument has some great specs about it! The drum is light, the head sounds great, the zills have good motion and sound great, and the rim of the drum isn't very thick, which makes it easy to hold. This drum doesn't sound better than the cooperman, but definitely feels better. Overall, this is an excellent investment.

I took the risk of buying this instrument online without first playing it, often a necessary move nowadays. Remo has some great products and I was intrigued by this one. Found a good review on youtube by an inexperienced player.
After playing it for a while, I basically feel that the design is good except for one major flaw. Frame drums are often built with these internal tuning systems, which look great but sacrifice sound in exchange. This one has an internal ring which contacts the skin and has adjustable tension. This ring becomes the main things resonating the tone of the skin and not the rest of the drum shell. With this setup, the tone just doesn't do it for me. The other similar setup that is often found on frame drums such as Cooperman brand is to split the shell into two parts with tuning hardware recessed inside the shell adjusting the tension by pushing the two shells apart from each other. This to my ears has the same problem. These types of drums are popular, but I suspect it's mainly with people who are using them primarily through microphones or not playing very often.
I had hoped that this issue might not apply as much for the riq, because it's an instrument of only high and midrange pitches. My two cents.

While this is not the finest riq on the market, it certainly is awesome for under $100. Great versatility, good sound, tuning, lightweight (for long playing sessions) and looks good.

This Riq definitely gets the job done in an educational setting. Being a University student, I've begun learning on this model that the school ordered. It has good sound across the drum, what you'd expect from an every day Riq. The tuning system works well. My only issues are the slightly heavier weight (this can wear your wrist out quickly) and the skin graphic (but not really a problem).
