I cleaned with brasso twice, as I did with my other unlathed gong.

I love my new Sun Gong. It's beautiful as an art piece, but even more beautiful when played. I've used it in a few sound baths so far and everyone loves it. I'll be purchasing some new mallets now and will save some $ for another gong to complement this one. Ordering through Steve Weiss was easy, shipping was fast and the packaging was perfect to protect it.

I have two other 32" gongs from another company: one fully unlathed and the other fully lathed. The Sun Gong is a hybrid of those two styles. It looks great and I've been getting some very interesting sounds from it. It has a phenomenally rich, resonant fundamental tone that sustains for a remarkably long time. It resists crashing but can generate a lot of subtly evocative tones when you use different types of mallets on it. I'm very pleased with it.

A Great Sounding Gong

I was looking for a smaller (28/30"), but deep sounding gong to add to my set up. All the wind gongs I tried were too thin, with too many high overtones tax would obscure the initial deep sound. I found a 28" Sun Gong at the Gong Summit this past July (2019) and it was love at first strike! The sun's are heavier/stiffer than the wind gongs, yet not as much as a chau--they really offer the best of both. The 28" has a deep sound/low pitch that doesn't disappear as you keep playing it. There are some higher overtones, but they are much more controlled than a wind gong. At only 28", it is deeper/lower sounding than some bigger gongs I own!

I cannot say enough about this awesome instrument - hand picked is definitely the way to go! - In my opinion, the sound this 28 inch gong is capable of rivals that of a 32 inch Paiste or Meinl - in my extensive gong collection, this one is my current favorite! By far.

This gong is an incredible addition to my collection. I have purchased several gongs from Steve Weiss and have never been disappointed.
Currently, I have 16", 22", and 28" Wind Gongs in my collection, which are absolutely beautiful and give that roaring low-end white noise that just resonates so well. For this gong, I wanted similar characteristics, but something a little more dry and focused. The Sun Gong is absolutely perfect for just that. It has amazing tone, stunning visual appearance, and can easy fit into a cymbal bag to take to your next gig. I highly recommend this one for the gong collector, church percussionist (Psalms 150:5), or anyone just wanting a really great item to have for home decor.
