This large version of the traditional ratchet measures 14.5″ long and is very loud. These large ratchets are hand crafted in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
The construction is outstanding, and it works beautifully, but as mentioned in the description Steve Weiss Music offers it is quite loud - frankly, much too loud for any of the orchestras I work with. I wish there was something available between this and the smaller "crank" ratchet that we see used most often.
The build quality is why my rating is so high. The fact that I doubt I'll ever use it in concert (because of how loud it is) is why it's not rated a "5."

Wow - so perfectly loud!
Comments:
Doing Pines of Rome, this filled the bill. So many other single hand ratchets are difficult to control to get a loud long continuous roll. But this is so so much easier. Highly recommend.

Gets the job DONE
Comments:
One of our HS Wind Ensembles performed a piece recently at festival, only to get the comment from an adjudicator that the ratchet wasn't loud enough. While this ratchet is likely overkill for the majority of pieces, it seems incredibly more durable than the average ratchet & definitely cuts through any of our bands & Symphony Orchestra (our largest concert band currently has about 75 students, with the other 2 bands roughly 50ish each). While the world was shut-down due to Coronavirus & our other festival was canceled, I suspect that judge won't make the same comment about this ratchet

very good

This is an extremely loud ratchet! It may actually be too loud for some situations. The ratchet seems to be very well-made. The sound is lower than the traditional smaller sizes, so be aware of that.

very loud

I own a smaller ratchet, but the orchestra I play with was playing Beethoven's Wellington's Victory. The ratchet has a very full, bold sound and loud enough to cut through the orchestra and cannon sounds. I've only had it for a month, but it seems to be very sturdy.
