Method of Movement for Marimba

Comments:

A great comprehensive book that gets down to the real 'science' of four mallet playing. Would not recommend as a beginner book but would highly recommend for experienced mallet players.

Comments:

My teen's marimba teacher had us order this book. It is a classic. I can't say much about the content, since I am not the musician, but the print is clear and easy to read. The price here is reasonable (people on Amazon were trying to sell used copies for $800! It arrived very quickly. I do wish the binding was a little different so that it would stay open easily on a music stand.

A MUST HAVE

Comments:

If I could give this book more stars, I would. Stevens gives so much detail and information about 4-mallet playing and the exercises have become a part of my daily warm-up. Disclaimer: You MUST read the first 40 pages before moving on to the exercises. It is invaluable advice and guidance to mallet playing.

A must have for any serious percussionist. Make sure you read the text portion. The most important part of the book.

Worth It

Comments:

Great for fine-tuning technique. The reading may be a little dry at times, but it definitely is worth the money and time. When taken slowly and patiently, this book benefits players of all levels.

Woot!

Comments:

This book is wonderful. The first half is all text, but it's worth reading over before you get to practicing (as Stevens tell you to do). He basically goes over the entire grip. It's advised to have the mallets ready and to give a few practice strokes when he describes what should and shouldn't be happening when you try the different strokes. Then, after the reading, go past the exercises to the BACK of the book, and there is a grid with "Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced". This grid tells you what exercises in the book are good to start on and work up with. I recommend this book highly to anyone who wants to takes this grip into a performances.
