Caveat: this is the first Jing I've really played. It has the upward gliss sound that I wanted, but only at louder volumes. I've found it sounds best with a harder cotton-tipped timpani mallet, but watching videos I think in Peking opera a wooden mallet is used? Generally it feels lower quality, with an uneven/inconsistent tone, and it seems a little thin (somehow reminds me of sheet metal). You can't expect high quality cymbals/gongs for $30 though. I personally bought this to record some Peking opera -like percussion, and it sounds good enough for a home version of that. And I've been enjoying using it with a choked-off sound in my drum set (on a table with a cloth, or on a drum). So $30 was a comfy price point for me, and if you're looking for two pitches you wouldn't break the bank. But it's a little cheap. (I'm also glad Steve Weiss carried it! Was having a hard time finding these in other stores.)

We were looking for a cymbal or gong for a certain sound effect for our band in a piece. The percussion instructor at the local university recommended your 9-inch Chinese Opera Gong. We ordered it, and it gave exactly what we wanted.

I ordered a second one of these later to go with the one I had. Somehow, with no communication with SWM whatsoever, the pitches just happened to match perfectly. The gong I received is quite a bit heavier and thicker. The one I had first could open up easily with just a hand hit, this one will not. Great sound though and if you need 2, the pitches should be different enough to contrast well.

I am using this opera gong in 2 pieces I have programmed for my students this semester. Everywhere we have performed, this instrument is a crowd favorite. Clear sound quality and great effect. Very good value for the money.

This gong has a very obvious upward pitch bend when struck. It's a really cool effect, and much less expensive than all the other brands. Whoever selected these gongs did a great job!
